LONG ISLAND, N.Y. — November 2, 2013 — Northport junior Mike Brannigan won boys Class A at the Section XI Cross Country County Championships in 15:58.16, the fastest time on the course this season, and Northport took the first three places to win the team title with 21 points. Connetquot senior Erin Melly won girls Class A in 19:53.21, and Northport also won the girls Class A team title with 51 points.
Brannigan finished 33.76 seconds ahead of senior teammates Tim McGowan (16:31.92) and Jack McGowan (16:38.54). Northport seniors Justin Leopold and Nick Termine finished seventh and eighth, and Northport beat Sachem North (81) and Commack (126).
Melly held off Eastport-South Manor freshman Taylor McClay (19:54.63) by 1.42 seconds, the closest finish of the day, with Bellport junior Mariah Jno-Charles third. Senior Brigid Brennan led Northport in fifth as the team beat Sachem East (79).
Shoreham-Wading River senior Ryan Udvadia won boys Class B in 16:26.84, the second-fastest time on the course this season, 29.74 seconds ahead of Islip senior Mike Watts, and Shoreham-Wading River won the team title with 41 points. Miller Place senior Tiana Guevara won girls Class B in 19:37.41, the fastest girls time on the course this season, 29.96 seconds ahead of Shoreham-Wading River eighth-grader Katherine Lee, and Miller Place won the team title with 34.
Port Jefferson went one-two in boys Class C behind junior James Burke (17:47.78) and sophomore Justin Julich, and won the team title with 35 points. Center Moriches junior Ryleigh Donegan won girls Class C in a personal-best 20:52.14, 10.85 seconds ahead of Mattituck freshman Melanie Pfennig, but Mattituck won the team title with 39 points to Center Moriches' 45.
In Class D, Southold junior Jonathan Rempe won the boys race in 18:27.84, but Stony Brook won the team title by one point, 27 to 28. Stony Brook senior Margot Rashba won the girls race in 21:33.74, 67.07 seconds ahead of eighth-grade teammate Clara Walker, and Stony Brook won that team title with 26.
