BRONX, N.Y. — November 10, 2018 — St. Anthony's senior Matthew Payamps won the boys championship race at the CHSAA Intersectional championship in 12:49.74, a personal best, and Archbishop Molloy won the boys team title with 61 points. Sacred Heart junior Maggie Maier won the girls championship race in 15:02.33, also a personal best.
Payamps finished 4 seconds ahead of teammate Brendan Dearie (12:53.74), and Xavier junior Oliver Branham-Upton was third in 13:03.20. It was Payamps' third win of the season, on a chilly, windy day in the Bronx.
Archbishop Molloy beat Monsignor Farrell (94) and St. Anthony's (105) for its first boys championship title on record. Senior James Loeffel led Molloy in fourth place in 13:04.15, followed by junior John Ostling (13:30.91), senior John Loeffel (13:33.17), senior Demir Degirmenci (13:36.00) and junior Matisse Barreira (13:38.13), a 34-second spread from first to fifth.
Maier, who also won twice earlier this season, finished ahead of teammate Shannon Thieke (15:10.03), who ran a personal best. Neither threatened the best championship time on record for the race, the 14:43.70 Colleen Schmidt of Holy Trinity ran in 2010.
St. Anthony's dominated the junior varsity races. Junior Jonathan Solar was second in the JV championship race as St. Anthony's won the team title on a tie with Xavier at 30 points, and the Friars also won JV B with 34 points behind a one-two finish from junior Liam Rego (14:33.09) and sophomore Daniel Mullan (14:34.83). Junior Joseph Traverso won the JV C race in 14:52.30 as St. Anthony's won that team title with 34. Xavier freshman Quincy Flett won the JV championship race in 13:57.33.
In the varsity B race, LaSalle Academy junior Elias Torres won in 15:11.64, but Monsignor McClancy took the team title with 36 points.
