KINGS PARK, N.Y. — October 25, 2011 — Hauppauge senior Ryan Colabella won the boys championship race at the Section XI Division Championships in 16:17.60, and Sachem East senior Rachel Paul won the girls race in 18:42.60. Northport won the boys team title with 98 points and Ward Melville won the girls title with 68, both for the third straight year.
Colabella finished 9.6 seconds ahead of North Babylon junior Kris Moran (16:27.20) at Sunken Meadow State Park, a personal best on the course. Northport sophomore Mike Branigan was third overall in 16:37.50, which also won the Division 1 race by 5.1 seconds over Sachem East senior Ryan Scarpelli (16:42.60). Northport beat Walt Whitman (116) and Smithtown (127) for the overall team title after also winning in 2009 and 2010.
In the division races, Northport won Division 1 with 43 points, Walt Whitman took Division 2 with 30, and Harborfields won Division 3 with 31, led by a one-two finish from Austin Coneys (16:55.30) and Cameron Coneys (17:05.20). Shoreham-Wading River won Division 4 with 26 points behind John Lee, who won the race in 16:43.00.
Paul won the girls championship race by 35.6 seconds, also a personal best on the course. Miller Place sophomores Tiana Guevara (19:18.20) and Talia Guevara (19:18.50) finished second and third, and they went one-two in the Division 3 race as well. Ward Melville scored 68 points to beat Sachem East (98) and Northport (120) after winning in 2009 and 2010.
Ward Melville also won Division 1 with 34 points. Northport freshman Victoria D’Amato won the Division 2 race in 19:24.80 as Northport took that team title with 29. Sayville won Division 3 on 56 points, and Bayport-Blue Point won Division 4 with 20 behind junior Katie Saroka, who won the race in 19:43.20.
In the team qualifier races, Sayville junior Kieran Harrison won the boys race in 17:30.10 and East Hampton’s Dana Cebulski won the girls race in 20:31.10, while West Islip (153) and Shoreham-Wading River (66) won the team scoring. Shoreham-Wading River junior Joe Whelan (18:02.21) and Northport’s Sarah Zieve (21:15.48) won the individual-team races.
Neither championship race threatened the best marks on record for the meet: 16:00.30 by Sachem East’s Alex Saavedra and 18:21.80 by Kelsey Margey, both from 2010.
