BRONX, N.Y. — November 11, 2017 — St. Anthony's senior Mason Gatewood won the boys championship race at the CHSAA Intersectional championship in 12:40.81, and Sacred Heart sophomore Maggie Maier won the girls championship race in 15:11.13, a personal best. Xavier won the boys team title with 35 points and Notre Dame Academy won the girls title with 33.
Gatewood, who had won twice earlier in the season, finished 9.8 seconds ahead of Xavier senior Aidan Donahue (12:50.61), with St. Peter's senior Ryan Tierney third in 12:52.79. The races went off on a freezing morning in the Bronx, with temperatures in the low 30s.
Donahue's runner-up finish led Xavier past St. Anthony's (65) and St. Peter's (130). Xavier seniors Josef Raphael Oettl (13:01.77) and Michael Crorkin (13:03.36) were fifth and sixth, senior Sawyer Gwyn-Rowsom was ninth and senior Fergus Macdonnell 13th as Xavier put five runners inside the top 13.
Maier, who came into the race with four wins this season, beat Notre Dame Academy sophomore Sierra Dinneen (15:16.87) by 5.74 seconds, and Kellenberg junior Maureen Lewin was third in 15:29.38. Dinneen led Notre Dame Academy past Sacred Heart Academy (72) and Kellenberg (76) for the team title.
Xavier also won the junior varsity team title with 29 points and the JV B title with 24 behind a one-two finish from senior Alex Vitarelli (14:30.70) and junior Alfred Cirelli (14:35.46). St. Anthony's junior Philip Polo won the JV championship race in 14:07.50. Chaminade freshman Frank Naudus won the JV C race in 15:01.23 as Chaminade edged Xavier, 45 to 46, for that team title.
Mount St. Michael senior Saif Parchment won the varsity B race by 36.28 seconds in 14:25.14, and Cardinal Spellman won the team title with 50 points. Kellenberg senior Claire Burns won the girls JV race in 17:24.48 as Kellenberg took that title with 25.
