Kevin McDermott wins steeplechase and 3200; Chris Roberts clears 13-03.00

LONG ISLAND, N.Y. — May 15, 2005 — Chaminade senior Kevin McDermott won the 3000-meter steeplechase at the NSCHSAA League Championships in a personal-best 9:36.74, the fastest time on Long Island this season and the best on record on Long Island, and also won the 3200 in 9:53.00. Chaminade sophomore Ryan McDermott was second in both races, 18.82 seconds back in the steeplechase and 3.6 seconds back in the 3200.

St. Anthony's senior Chris Roberts won the pole vault with a personal-best 13-03.00, the best mark on Long Island this season, as St. Anthony's took the top three places with senior Christopher Dooley second and junior Dan Gliganic third. St. Anthony's also swept the 400-meter hurdles, where junior George Pickel won in a personal-best 59.38.

St. John's junior Mike Fitzgerald won the 100 in 11.38 and the 200 in 23.32. Holy Trinity senior Kimathi Cooper won the 800 in a personal-best 1:56.78, 0.41 seconds ahead of St. John's junior Danny Harris, and St. Anthony's junior Robert Fleming won the 1600 in a personal-best 4:28.13, 3.66 seconds ahead of St. John's senior Hugh Donaldson. St. Anthony's sophomore Richard Waldmann won the 400 in a personal-best 51.46.

St. Anthony's senior Anthony Toro won the 110 hurdles in 16.35 and the high jump at 6-00.00. St. Anthony's junior Rob Malone won the long jump with a personal-best 20-04.75, and Chaminade sophomore Richard Semenick won the triple jump with a personal-best 40-08.50. St. Anthony's sophomore Walter Henning won the shot put at 51-06.00, and Chaminade senior Alexander Pessala won the discus at 144-05, with Henning second.

St. John's sophomore Danay Spencer won the girls long jump at 16-08.75 and the triple jump at 37-03.50, the best triple jump on Long Island this season, and had the best mark in the shot put, 33-10.00. Sacred Heart senior Rolanda Bell ran the fastest girls 1500, a personal-best 4:36.54, the fastest time on Long Island this season.

St. Anthony's sophomore Gina Perno won the girls 800 in a personal-best 2:14.80, ahead of Bell, and St. John's junior Christine Locher won the 200 in 26.33. St. Anthony's senior Kelley Coughlan won the 100 hurdles in 17.05, and Kellenberg junior Bridget Conway won the high jump at 5-00.00. Holy Trinity junior Yves-Line Ghislain and St. Anthony's sophomore Jessica Antoniades both ran 12.80 in the 100.

St. John's freshman Siobhan Gedon ran the fastest girls 400, 59.90, Holy Trinity senior Katie Di Camillo the fastest 3000, 10:28.65, and Kellenberg junior Catherine Groene the fastest 400 hurdles, 69.42. St. Anthony's senior Kathryn Thompson had the best discus throw at 92-09.25.
