James Joy wins 3200 and steeplechase; Archibald and Faherty double

LONG ISLAND, N.Y. — May 25, 2006 — Ward Melville senior James Joy won the Division One 3200-meter run at the Section XI Division Championships in a personal-best 9:32.48, the fastest on Long Island this season, and the 3000-meter steeplechase in 9:49.15, both by 13.76 seconds. Longwood junior Austin Archibald won the Division One 110-meter hurdles in 15.02 and the high jump at 1.87m, and West Islip junior Dennis Faherty won the Division Two shot put at a personal-best 17.01m, the best mark on Long Island this season, and the discus at 43.10m.

Smithtown West junior Dan Holst won the Division One 800 in a personal-best 1:57.81, the fastest on Long Island this season, and the 400 in 49.98, 0.7 seconds ahead of teammate Nick Lemp. Bay Shore senior Rasheem Hunt won the 100 by 0.01 seconds in 11.46 and the long jump at a personal-best 6.88m, the best on Long Island this season. Commack senior Steven Jones won the 200 in a personal-best 22.77, Northport senior Sean Quinn won the 400-meter hurdles in a personal-best 56.18 and Connetquot senior Robert Krause won the 1600 in a personal-best 4:25.37.

Bay Shore junior Robert Sainvil won the Division One triple jump at a personal-best 13.35m, the best on Long Island this season, Ward Melville junior Matt Jurgielewicz won the discus at a personal-best 43.96m and Longwood senior Anthony Darden won the shot put.

West Islip junior John Badolato won three Division Two races: the 800 in a personal-best 1:58.14, the 1600 in 4:28.20 and the 3200 in 9:55.71. Centereach senior Brian Gilmartin won the 400-meter hurdles in a personal-best 55.52, the fastest on Long Island this season. Riverhead junior Shamel Lewis won the 100 in 11.47 and the 200 in 23.13 by 0.01 seconds, and Riverhead junior Chris Herbst won the 110-meter hurdles in a personal-best 15.48 and the triple jump. Bellport sophomore Dennis Scruggs won the 400 in a personal-best 50.97, Hauppauge senior Mike mcCristall won the steeplechase and West Islip senior Luke Schoen won the pole vault.

Westhampton Beach sophomore Jared Nilsson won the Division Three 110-meter hurdles in 15.93 and the 400-meter hurdles in a personal-best 57.74. Southampton senior Cory Benton won the 400 in a personal-best 49.84, Shoreham-Wading River senior Chris Hays won the 800 and 1600, Wyandanch sophomore Craig Slaughter won the 100 and John Glenn senior Carlton Wildman won the 200 by 0.05 seconds. Hampton Bays senior Virgil Romer won the discus at a personal-best 46.27m, Mount Sinai junior Nick David won the pole vault and Smithtown East junior Gregory Zielinski won the long jump and triple jump.
