Louis Day sweeps throws as best marks on record fall across the meet

SOUTH HUNTINGTON, N.Y. — May 18, 2008 — Holy Trinity senior Louis Day won the shot put at the NSCHSAA League Championships with a personal-best 55-00.25 and the discus with a personal-best 164-05, both the best marks on Long Island this season and the best on record for the meet. St. John the Baptist junior Jake Rachiele won the 100-meter final in 11.01, 0.01 seconds ahead of St. Anthony's junior Taylor Chaney.

Day's shot put beat the 51-06.00 Walter Henning threw in 2005, and his discus beat the 144-05 Alexander Pessala threw that year.

Chaney turned the result around in the 200 final, winning in a personal-best 22.71, 0.12 seconds ahead of Rachiele. Rachiele ran 22.23 in the semifinals, the fastest time on Long Island this season. St. Dominic's sophomore Jonathan Spence won the 400 in a personal-best 50.23, 0.08 seconds ahead of Holy Trinity junior Charles Gilreath, and Flyers senior Michael Schieck won the 800 in a personal-best 1:56.76, edging the 1:56.78 Kimathi Cooper ran in 2005.

Kellenberg senior Michael Elnick won the 1600 in a personal-best 4:24.71, 0.23 seconds ahead of Kellenberg senior Thomas Elnick, and Flyers senior Bryan Sutherland won the 3200 in 9:50.09, 0.09 seconds ahead of teammate Christopher Tonn. St. Anthony's junior Robert Cherkis won the steeplechase in 9:56.90. Kellenberg junior Ryan Adams won the 110 hurdles final in 15.38, and Kellenberg junior Kevin Ammirati won the 400 hurdles in a personal-best 57.72.

St. John the Baptist senior Amire Solomon won the triple jump at 44-02.25, the best mark on Long Island this season. Holy Trinity junior Kyle Brown won the high jump with a personal-best 6-02.00, St. Anthony's sophomore Michael Mastanduno won the long jump with a personal-best 21-07.00 and St. Anthony's senior Benjamin Martin won the pole vault at 12-06.00.

Kellenberg senior Kristin Wenthen won the girls 100 final in 13.12 and the 200 final in a personal-best 26.21. Kellenberg also won the distance races, with sophomore Clare Carroll taking the 1500 in 4:57.41, freshman Kylie Pearse the 3000 in 11:05.85 and sophomore Colleen Meenan the 800 in a personal-best 2:20.43. Kellenberg senior Meghan Wendleken won the 400 in 59.21, the best on record for the meet.

St. Anthony's sophomore Olivia Abbate won the 400 hurdles in a personal-best 67.51 and ran 16.00 in the 100 hurdles. St. Anthony's sophomore Victoria Profit won the high jump at 5-02.00 and the triple jump at 35-03.50, Holy Trinity junior Krista Fazio won the long jump at 16-05.25, and Sacred Heart junior Nina Renker won the discus at 120-08 and the shot put at 35-01.50.
