Rai Benjamin and Symone Darius run fastest times on record

WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. — May 18, 2014 — Mount Vernon junior Rai Benjamin won the 400-meter hurdles at the Westchester County Championships in a personal-best 52.25, the fastest time on record for the meet, and also won the 100 in 11.17. New Rochelle sophomore Symone Darius won the girls 100 in 12.04 and the 200 in a personal-best 24.13, both the fastest times on record.

Benjamin won the hurdles by 4.16 seconds over junior Cullen Malzo and broke the 56.82 Mount Vernon's Raheem Austin ran in 2012. Darius won the 100 by 0.71 seconds over teammate Ashley Wiggins and the 200 by 1.3 seconds, improving on the 24.26 Tanaya Yarde ran in 2011.

Bronxville senior John Flannery won the 800 in 1:53.42, 2.99 seconds ahead of New Rochelle senior Charles King and faster than any time on record for the meet. Hendrick Hudson senior Jack O'Brien won the javelin at a personal-best 58.36m, the best mark on record, with teammate Mike Gabrielsen second. Mount Vernon senior Taniya Mitchell won the girls hammer throw at a personal-best 49.32m, the best mark on record, after also winning the event in 2012.

Mamaroneck senior Alex Burks won the 3200 in a personal-best 9:39.95, Ossining junior Abdul Byabusha won the 400 in 49.41 and Eastchester junior Martin O'Connell won the 1600 in a personal-best 4:25.68. Senior Will Stallings won the 200 in a personal-best 22.16 and junior Danny Elia won the 110-meter hurdles in 15.74. Iona Prep senior Nick Todaro won the discus and hammer throw, Harrison senior Jeremy Altamuro won the shot put and Archbishop Stepinac senior Matt Desjardin won the long jump. Irvington senior Adrian Zias won the steeplechase in 9:50.52.

Ursuline sophomore Anna Flynn won the girls 1500 in 4:39.06, 0.15 seconds ahead of Mamaroneck sophomore Lauren Chapey, the 2012 winner. Wiggins won the 100-meter hurdles in 14.67, Rye Country sophomore Jinjer Pearce won the 400 in a personal-best 57.74, and Mamaroneck sophomore Shari Rauls won the 800 in 2:14.35. Hendrick Hudson senior Rasheedah Shardow won the 400-meter hurdles in a personal-best 66.34, 0.02 seconds ahead of New Rochelle eighth-grader Rachel Darius.

New Rochelle junior Nijera Manuel won the discus at a personal-best 33.78m, and New Rochelle sophomore Monae Cooper won the shot put. Port Chester senior Jazmin Acosta won the long jump, Ursuline junior Kene Odenigbo won the high jump and John Jay CR freshman Brooke Nohilly won the steeplechase in 7:33.15. New Rochelle senior Caitlin Apollo won the race walk in a personal-best 7:40.15.
