Kelly Hayes, Symone Darius, Zola Golden and Brian Cook set best marks on record

WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. — May 29, 2014 — Pearl River seniors Kelly Hayes and Brian Cook each won two Division 1 distance races at the Section One State Qualifier Championships, and four athletes set the best marks on record for the meet. Hayes won the girls 2000 Meter Steeplechase in a personal-best 6:48.58, breaking the 6:53.59 Suffern's Ursula Svoboda ran in 2011, and also won the 3000 in 9:57.30, 0.75 seconds ahead of Ursuline sophomore Anna Flynn.

Cook won the boys 3000 Meter Steeplechase in 9:12.00, improving on the 9:18.01 he ran to win the race a year ago, and beat John Jay CR junior Ben Smith by 43.94 seconds. He also won the Division 1 3200 in a personal-best 9:11.30, 20.26 seconds ahead of Mamaroneck senior Alex Burks.

New Rochelle sophomore Symone Darius won the Division 1 girls 200 in 24.24, breaking the 24.29 Mount Vernon's Deajah Stevens ran in 2010. Arlington junior Zola Golden won the Division 1 400 in 54.79, also beating a 2010 mark by Stevens, 56.18, and won by 3.27 seconds. Ramapo senior Kaylyn Gordon won the Division 1 triple jump with a personal-best 12.07m, past the 11.62m Suffern's Sara Bowens jumped in 2011, and also won the long jump at 5.58m.

North Rockland junior Eric Favors repeated as Division 1 champion in the shot put with 18.19m, up from his winning 14.60m last year, and also won the discus with a personal-best 51.53m. Mount Vernon junior Rai Benjamin repeated in the Division 1 400 hurdles in 55.04, and Carmel junior Benito Muniz repeated in the Division 1 800 in 1:54.71.

The closest finishes came in the Division 1 girls 100 hurdles, where Pearl River senior Amanda Moroney beat New Rochelle sophomore Victoria Jones-Alleyne 15.20 to 15.21, and the Division 1 girls 1500, where Ursuline's Flynn ran a personal-best 4:36.29 to edge Tappan Zee senior Erin Jaskot by 0.01. Mount Vernon junior Cody Housen won the Division 1 boys 200 by 0.05 seconds in 22.15.

Suffern freshman Kamryn McIntosh won the Division 1 girls 800 in 2:12.21, and Suffern junior Imani Solan won the 100 in 12.55. Tappan Zee junior Luke Gavigan won the Division 1 1600 in 4:14.94, and Beacon sophomore Rayvon Grey won the long jump at 6.93m and the triple jump with a personal-best 14.52m. Beacon senior James Brown won the high jump with a personal-best 1.98m.

In Division 2, Irvington junior Kiana Lee won the girls 200 and 400 in personal bests of 25.63 and 56.61, Woodlands senior Tyrone Barber won the boys 100 and 200, and Bronxville senior Claire Sargent won the shot put and discus.
