Christopher Tibbetts runs fastest time on record as Smithtown wins Class A

KINGS PARK, N.Y. — November 4, 2016 — Sachem North senior Christopher Tibbetts won the boys Class A race at the Section XI State Qualifier Meet in a personal-best 16:09.40, the fastest time on record for the race, and Smithtown won the Class A team title with 56 points. Westhampton Beach senior Jack Ryan won Class B in 16:42.18, Port Jefferson junior Sam Walker won Class C in 17:33.78, and Shelter Island freshman Kal Lewis won Class D in 17:00.44.

Tibbetts improved on the 16:14.20 Hauppauge's Ryan Colabella ran in 2011 and finished 8.3 seconds ahead of teammate Jonathan Lauer (16:17.70). Smithtown West senior Michael Grabowski was third in a personal-best 16:21.77 in a field of 158. Smithtown beat Sachem North (86) and Ward Melville (91) for its first Class A title since 2005, and also topped the combined boys standings with 78 points.

Ryan won Class B by 16.24 seconds over Sayville senior Philip Gunther, who ran a personal-best 16:58.42. Miller Place won the team title by one point, 57 to 58 over Harborfields, its first title on record. Senior Brendan Murphy led Miller Place in third in 17:08.74, followed by senior Tom Schott (fifth, 17:11.84), senior Aditya Mehra and freshman Tom Cirrito.

Walker won Class C by 24.39 seconds, but Center Moriches took the team title, its first on record, with 31 points to Port Jefferson's 37. Center Moriches sophomore Michael Donegan (17:58.17) and junior Daniel Gross (18:01.80) finished second and third, both with personal bests, and senior Tyler Cosma was fourth.

Lewis won Class D by 55.54 seconds in a personal best, and Shelter Island took the first four places for its first title on record with 19 points. Junior Joshua Green was second in 17:55.98, senior Will Garrison third in a personal-best 18:15.55 and freshman Jonas Kinsey fourth. Stony Brook was second with 65 points.
