LONG ISLAND, N.Y. — May 30, 2024 — Lindenhurst's Jake Albert won the seeded boys 3200-meter run at the Section 8 State Qualifier in a personal-best 9:23.28, the fastest time on record for the race, and Northport's Mia Wickard won the seeded girls 3000 in a personal-best 9:52.53, also a best on record. Syosset's Jessica Alessi won the Division 1 and 2 girls 3000 in a personal-best 10:14.37, beating the previous best on record, the 10:21.26 Jericho's Ana Markovina ran in 2022.
Albert beat the 9:24.82 Sanford H. Calhoun's Logan Schaeffler ran in 2022 and finished 6.43 seconds ahead of Bay Shore's Jake Gogarty (9:29.71), with Harborfields' Hartley Semmes third in 9:30.05. Wickard held off Westhampton Beach's Lily Strebel (9:52.98) by 0.45 seconds, and William Floyd's Zariel Macchia was third in 9:54.35. Alessi, second in this race a year ago, won by 7.05 seconds over South Great Neck's Isabella Spagnoli as defending champion Aislinn Frazer of Friends Academy (Li) placed third.
Three other athletes also went past the previous bests on record. Roosevelt's Jah'rece Mathews won the Division 1 and 2 boys discus with a personal-best 156-01.00. Sanford H. Calhoun's Sophia Hines won the girls triple jump at 38-10.25, a personal best and the best mark on Long Island this season, after placing second a year ago. In the 200-meter dash, West Babylon's Josaih Price ran the fastest time of the day, a personal-best 21.84.
Miller Place's Jillian Scully won the girls discus with a personal-best 159-08.00, the best mark on Long Island this season. West Islip's Rocco Carpinello won the boys long jump at 22-04.50, matching Longwood's Garfield Geddes, and Connetquot's Chloe Young won the girls long jump with a personal-best 18-05.00. Center Moriches' Tyler Bonventre won the boys shot put at 52-06.50.
Oceanside's Jason Kerber won the Division 1 and 2 boys 3200 in a personal-best 9:35.54. Oyster Bay's Christopher Dean won the Division 2 boys 400 in 49.61, Malverne's Nicea Jones won the Division 2 girls 400 in 57.11, Island Trees' Patrick Coll won the Division 2 boys 400 hurdles in 59.27 and South Val Stream's Rachelle Griffith won the Division 2 girls 400 hurdles in 1:06.08.
Sanford H. Calhoun's Max Jose won the boys triple jump at 43-05.75, North Val Stream's Nattaly Lindo won the girls discus at 123-02.00 and North Val Stream's Michael Muoio won the boys pole vault at 12-00.00. Shoreham-Wading River's Spencer Lee won the unseeded boys 3200 in 9:43.94 and Lindenhurst's Maggie Kleiber won the unseeded girls 3000 in 10:47.71.
Several sprint and middle-distance events were run in sections. Northport's Vito LaRosa ran the fastest time in the 100 at 10.70, Shoreham-Wading River's Michael Huebner ran the fastest 800 at 1:53.41, Bayport-Blue Point's Sophia McInnes ran the fastest girls 800 at 2:07.18 and North Babylon's Jordan Peck ran the fastest 400 hurdles at 55.54, all personal bests.
