Dan Martin wins steeplechase by 57.2 seconds; Geary Gubbins takes distance double

LONG ISLAND, N.Y. — May 16, 2005 — Commack senior Dan Martin won the Division One 3000 meter steeplechase at the Boys Division Championship Meet in a personal-best 9:36.16, the best mark on record on Long Island, finishing 57.2 seconds ahead of Longwood senior Alex Sico. Southampton senior Geary Gubbins won the Division Three 1600 meters in 4:20.60, the fastest time on Long Island this season, and the 3200 meters in 9:42.78, and also ran the fastest Division Three 800 meters in 1:57.32.

Ward Melville senior Gregg Cantwell won both Division One distance races, the 1600 meters in 4:24.71 and the 3200 meters in 9:31.31, 8.08 seconds ahead of Martin. Half Hollow Hills East senior Jon Barthelemy did the same in Division Two, winning the 1600 in a personal-best 4:25.69 and the 3200 in a personal-best 9:47.33.

West Islip junior Luke Schoen won the Division Two pole vault at a personal-best 4.41m, the best height on Long Island this season, and Mount Sinai senior Mike Trappen won the Division Three shot put at a personal-best 16.70m, the best mark on Long Island this season. Riverhead senior Michael Owen won the Division Two shot put at a personal-best 16.38m, and Hauppauge senior Julien Lemarie won the discus at 46.06m.

The Division One sprints were close. Longwood junior Gil Callaway won the 100 meters in 11.00, then finished 0.03 behind Bay Shore junior Anthony Martin, who won the 200 in 22.70. Commack senior Adam Moroff won the 110 meter hurdles in a personal-best 15.01 by 0.07, Northport junior Sean Quinn won the 400 meter hurdles in a personal-best 57.25 by 0.19 and Longwood senior Pat Brutus won the 400 meters in a personal-best 52.11. Longwood senior Keegan Johnson won the triple jump at 13.53m, the best mark on Long Island this season, and Bay Shore senior Greg Millan won the long jump at 6.46m.

East Hampton senior Andrew Forrester won the Division Two 200 meters in a personal-best 22.68 and the 400 in a personal-best 51.34, and West Babylon senior Rakim Gaymon won the 100 meters in 11.50, 0.01 ahead of West Islip junior Tyler Shaw.

In Division Three, Stony Brook senior Justin Song won the 100 meters in 11.20 and the 200 in 22.99, Southampton senior Luis German won the 400 meter hurdles in a personal-best 57.57 and the steeplechase in 10:23.26, and Westhampton Beach freshman Jared Nilsson won the 110 meter hurdles in 15.73, 0.08 ahead of Miller Place senior Kevin Wolfe. Mount Sinai sophomore Nick David won the pole vault at a personal-best 4.26m and Amityville senior Tamar Fraser won the triple jump at a personal-best 13.08m.
