Berfrantz Charles wins 55 and long jump for North Babylon

BRENTWOOD, N.Y. — February 2, 2010 — North Babylon senior Berfrantz Charles won the 55-meter dash final in 6.67 and the long jump at 22-08.25 at the Section XI Large School Championships. West Babylon senior Lionel Fontaine won the high jump at a personal-best 6-07.00, the best mark on record on Long Island, and Bay Shore senior Brandon Hutchinson won the triple jump at 45-11.50, also the best mark on record on Long Island.

Charles ran the fastest semifinal time, 6.62, the fastest on Long Island this season, and won the final by 0.08 seconds over Longwood senior Tom Scala (6.75), with Longwood senior Walter Miles third in 6.76. In the long jump Charles beat Hutchinson, who jumped 22-04.50, and his mark was the second-best on record on Long Island.

Hutchinson edged Longwood senior Dannie Holland (45-09.75) and Central Islip junior Ryan Satchell (45-09.50) in the triple jump. Fontaine beat Northport senior Drayke Jackson, who cleared a personal-best 6-05.00.

Longwood senior Dimitrius Leonard won the 55 hurdles final in 7.85, 0.03 ahead of Jackson, who had run the fastest semifinal time in a personal-best 7.94. Bay Shore junior Raphael Rother won the 300 final in a personal-best 37.34, 0.14 ahead of North Babylon senior George Erazo, who had the fastest semifinal time in 38.09.

Connetquot junior Tyler Murtha, who was second to Walt Whitman senior Ben Windisch in the 3200, won the 1600 in 4:32.83 by 5.72 seconds, the fastest time on Long Island this season. Windisch won the 3200 in 9:44.47 by 2.77 seconds. Smithtown West senior James Snak won the 1000 in 2:39.20, and Longwood junior Joe Fuller won the 600 in a personal-best 1:26.09, the fastest on Long Island this season, 0.18 ahead of West Babylon senior Cody Amengual.

Riverhead senior Michael Smith won the shot put at 52-07.00, the best mark on Long Island this season, ahead of North Babylon senior Sean Blackman (50-11.75).
