D'Jai Baker sets 200 and 400 marks; Jackie Thorne lowers steeple mark

LONG ISLAND, N.Y. — May 19, 2014 — North Babylon sophomore D'Jai Baker won the Division Two 400 meters at the Girls Division Championship Meet in 55.55, the fastest time on record for the meet and the fastest on Long Island this season, and won the Division Two 200 in a personal-best 24.50, also the fastest time on record for the meet. Northport sophomore Jackie Thorne won the Division One 2000-meter steeplechase in a personal-best 6:58.40, the fastest time on record for the race.

Baker's 200 improved on the 24.57 Copiague's Janel Francis ran in 2011, and Thorne edged the 6:58.45 Mount Sinai's Janie Turek ran in 2009, finishing 4.54 seconds ahead of Connetquot senior Erin Melly. Thorne also won the Division One 800 in a personal-best 2:14.16. Sachem North senior Katie Michta won the Division One 1500-meter race walk for the second time, lowering her own best on record to a personal-best 6:47.77, the fastest on Long Island this season. Bayport-Blue Point sophomore Kathleen Cibuls won the Division Three 400 in a personal-best 56.29, also under the previous best on record.

Miller Place senior Tiana Guevara won three Division Three races: the 800 in a personal-best 2:14.76, the 1500 in 4:38.98 and the 3000 in 10:31.62, leading a Miller Place sweep of the 3000 with Talia Guevara and Laura Nolan. Nolan won the Division Three steeplechase in a personal-best 7:11.18. Cibuls also won the long jump (5.75m) and the triple jump (11.58m), both personal bests.

In Division One, Brentwood junior Alexia Douglas won the 100 in a personal-best 12.15 and the 200 in a personal-best 24.86. Bay Shore sophomore Aviana Goode ran the fastest 100-meter hurdles, a personal-best 14.65, and won the high jump at 1.60m. Melly won the 3000 in a personal-best 10:16.02, and Northport senior Brigid Brennan won the 1500 in 4:44.12. Half Hollow Hills East sophomore Mary Chimezie ran the fastest 400, 58.13, and Brentwood sophomore Asia Chen the fastest 400-meter hurdles, 65.91. Sachem North senior Sunja Joseph won the long jump at 5.76m and Sachem North sophomore Leah Blackall the triple jump at 11.98m.

In Division Two, North Babylon junior Nailah Jones won the 100 in a personal-best 12.29 and the long jump at 5.42m, and North Babylon senior Jessica Scheriff won the steeplechase in a personal-best 7:00.04, the second-fastest time on Long Island this season. Kings Park senior Shannon Ahern won the 800 in 2:17.78 and ran the fastest 400-meter hurdles, a personal-best 63.73. West Babylon eighth-grader Tara Hauff won the 3000 in a personal-best 10:36.76, Harborfields junior Jamie Grossman won the 1500 in 4:42.78 and Hauppauge senior Danielle Valenza won the discus with a personal-best 39.03m.

Babylon senior Ashley Lucas won the Division Three 100 (12.55) and 200 (25.74), both personal bests, and Bayport-Blue Point sophomore Lauren Hansen won the Division Three discus and shot put, also with personal bests.
