Brannigan, Bonhurst and Steinbrecher post best marks on record

LONG ISLAND, N.Y. — May 30, 2014 — Northport junior Mike Brannigan won the boys 1600 meters at the Section XI Individual Championships in 4:12.86, the fastest time on record for the meet, and also won the 800 in 1:55.45. Smithtown West senior Benjamin Bonhurst won the shot put at 19.77m, the best mark on record for the meet, and the discus at 57.42m, a personal best.

Brannigan beat Shoreham-Wading River senior Ryan Udvadia (4:14.67) by 1.81 seconds in the 1600, improving on the 4:14.85 Bobby Andrews ran in 2009. In the 800 he edged Eastport-South Manor senior Tom Meehan (1:55.67) by 0.22 seconds. Udvadia won the 3200 in a personal best of 9:16.35, 1.3 seconds ahead of Northport senior Tim McGowan.

Bonhurst's shot put beat Longwood senior Corey Murphy, who threw a personal best of 19.53m. Longwood senior Dayshaun Taylor won the long jump at 7.38m, the best mark on record for the meet, ahead of teammate Glen Reddick (7.23m). Shoreham-Wading River senior Keith Steinbrecher won the 3000-meter steeplechase in 9:30.28, a personal best and the fastest time on record for the meet, 2.65 seconds ahead of Miller Place senior Jeremy Miekley.

Huntington senior Y'Majesty Allen won the 400 in 49.28 and the 200 in 22.38. Sachem East senior Trevor Guerrera won the 400-meter hurdles in a personal best of 53.20, Longwood sophomore Spencer Payton won the 110-meter hurdles in 14.98 by 0.02 seconds, and Half Hollow Hills West senior Jarried Redwood won the 100 in 11.07. Riverhead senior Charles Villa won the pole vault at 4.34m.

In the girls meet, Bay Shore senior Imani McGhee won the long jump at 5.85m, the best mark on record for the meet, and the triple jump at 11.78m. Miller Place senior Tiana Guevara won the 1500 in a personal best of 4:30.43, the fastest on Long Island this season, by 8.41 seconds, and John Glenn senior Sarah Hardie won the 800 in 2:11.21, also the fastest on Long Island this season.

Brentwood junior Alexia Douglas won the 100 in 12.23 and the 200 in 25.04. North Babylon sophomore D'Jai Baker won the 400 in a personal best of 55.34, Bay Shore sophomore Aviana Goode won the 100-meter hurdles in 14.54 and Kings Park senior Shannon Ahern won the 400-meter hurdles in 62.68. Connetquot senior Erin Melly won the 3000 in 10:16.41, North Babylon senior Jessica Scheriff won the 2000-meter steeplechase in 6:55.30 and Sachem North senior Katie Michta won the 1500-meter race walk in 6:45.52. East Islip junior Faith Penny won the high jump at 1.62m, John Glenn junior Emily Taylor won the pole vault at 3.27m and Hauppauge senior Danielle Valenza won the discus at 35.89m.
