SOUTH HUNTINGTON, N.Y. — February 7, 2017 — Plainedge junior Lauren Valenti won the 55 meters in a personal best of 7.45 and the 300 in 42.36 at the Section VIII Class County B Championships. Valley Stream North sophomore Juel Charles won the shot put at 39-02.25 and the weight throw at 33-08.50, and Wantagh senior Megan Gordon won the 1000 in a personal best of 3:01.51, the third-fastest time on Long Island this season.
Valenti edged Valley Stream South sophomore Chibugo Obichere (7.47) by 0.02 seconds in the 55 and beat North Shore sophomore Caroline Reiner (42.76) by 0.4 seconds in the 300. Obichere won the 55-meter hurdles in a personal best of 8.41, the third-fastest time on Long Island this season, 0.14 seconds ahead of Reiner.
Gordon won the 1000 by 7.09 seconds over Valley Stream South sophomore DeAnna Martin, who then won the 600 in a personal best of 1:39.40, 0.86 seconds ahead of Wantagh junior Tess Duignan. Charles's shot put was the second-best mark on Long Island this season, and her weight throw was the best on Long Island this season.
In the distance races, South Side freshman Carly Woelfel won the 3000 in a personal best of 11:03.51, 3.76 seconds ahead of Cold Spring freshman Fiona Haegeland. Wheatley senior Brianna O'Brien won the 1500 in a personal best of 4:54.08 by 19.26 seconds over North Shore freshman Nicole Schneider. Hewlett sophomore Sophie Riegel won the 1500-meter race walk in 8:04.09.
Jericho junior Megan Su won the long jump at 17-03.00, and Oyster Bay freshman Erica Duke won the triple jump with a personal best of 35-01.00, a quarter-inch ahead of Valley Stream South sophomore Lindsay Smith. Duke was second in the long jump with a personal best of 16-11.25. North Shore junior Theresa Scarola won the pole vault with a personal best of 8-00.00, and Seaford junior Nataly Ramirez won the high jump at 4-10.00.
